Vitamin C, I find people tend to love or hate it! I personally love it myself and like using it in my routine but my only experience prior to this one was with The Ordinary Vitamin C Suspension which has 23% of ascorbic acid in. I loved it, it was strong but it worked and my skin, thankfully, got on with the high percentage of vitamin C very well! However, for some people, that’s really not the case and they really suffer from irritation with ascorbic acid. If this is you then you might find it helpful to try a vitamin C derivative! If you want more information on what vitamin C derivatives are then you can see this blog post HERE.

Today, I’ll be reviewing the Summer Fridays CC Me Serum which contains vitamin C derivatives. I’ve been using this one since August and it’s now December and I’ve finished it so I think it’s a good time to give you my thoughts!

BRAND: Summer Fridays

  • Contains vitamin C derivatives, 3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid and Ascorbyl Glucoside
  • Contains niacinamide, squalane and multiple peptides
  • Vegan and cruelty-free

I’ve Got *Insert Skin Type Here* Skin, Can I use It?

Summer Fridays don’t specify which skin types this product is suitable for but I would personally say it is suitable for all! However, this product does contain fragrance so sensitive skin types or those with a fragrance sensitivity should be cautious!

My Experience With It

From the very first day of use, I really enjoyed using the Summer Fridays CC Me Serum in my AM routine! I experienced no irritation, no breakouts and instead I just achieved a lovely glow every time I used it!

I particularly liked that this serum had niacinamide, peptides and squalene in. This is because I then didn’t have to use a separate niacinamide serum which reduced down my AM routine length! I also loved the addition of peptides because as you’ve seen from my blog post on peptides (HERE), you can never have too many peptides! They are the building blocks of our skin and without peptides to support the proteins, you would see loss of firmness, texture changes and the appearance of wrinkles in your skin. Finally, this serum also contains squalane, which is known to be a fantastic moisturiser that makes your skin nice and smooth, without being heavy or greasy. If you normally use an oil after or with your moisturiser in the morning, you may find the squalane in this serum is enough for your skin so again, saving you time in your routine!

Any Downsides?

  • Contains fragrances: the Summer Fridays CC Me Serum has multiple fragrances in which didn’t irritate my skin but we all know that these ingredients have the ability to cause irritation. I prefer to use products without added fragrance in so this was definitely a downside for me! If you have a sensitivity to fragrance or sensitive skin, tread with caution!
  • This product is made of vitamin C derivatives and the evidence on their abilities to perform the 3 magical benefits that pure vitamin C can perform (be an antioxidant, boost collagen and brighten the skin), is limited. So not necessarily a downside for anyone who is specifically looking for a vitamin C derivative product but you have to consider how much these derivatives can do for your skin and what you are looking to get out of using this product!
  • It’s an expensive serum and I used it all up, with daily use, in just 4 months. Now if this was a pure vitamin C product, I wouldn’t begrudge the price but considering it’s made of derivatives (of which the evidence for their abilities is weak at best!), it makes me less happy about paying over £50 for this serum

How Do I Use It?

I used the Summer Fridays CC Me Serum in my AM routine only, after cleansing and toning and before any other serums like hyaluronic acid, for example. I used 1-2 pumps depending on how I was feeling but 1 pump was enough to cover my face entirely. I would then mist my face, apply moisturiser and SPF and head into my day!

Gimme The Deets…

£57 for 30ml

Where Can I Buy It?

I got mine from Cult Beauty but you can also find it on Space NK.

Once opened it lasts 12 months and it requires nothing special in terms of storage.

Stick Or Spin Again?

Now, I absolutely loved using this serum! It really was a pleasure to use and I felt genuinely sad when it was empty! However, I’m a research based person and I can’t argue with the fact that pure vitamin C, otherwise known as ascorbic acid, is the gold standard for the skin! With derivatives they not only have to be absorbed by the skin but they also need to be converted into pure vitamin C for our skin to actually be able to get any benefits from the product and considering we don’t know much of the derivatives are converted for use, it makes me less inclined to want to use derivatives of vitamin C. So in that case, I would say that I enjoyed using this but for now, I’m going to look at a pure vitamin C serum to use next!

I think this serum is suitable for those who struggle with irritation from pure vitamin C, those who want a quick, all in one serum in the morning or for those who don’t use vitamin C up quickly, i.e don’t use it every day and I say this because ascorbic acid products have to be used up quickly before they oxidise and go funny!

I personally use vitamin C everyday, and haven’t experienced irritation from ascorbic acid (so far!!) and don’t mind a longer routine in the mornings so I’m not desperate for an all in one serum! So this is how I reached my decision on whether I would stick with this product or spin for another!

I really hope this review is helpful for those of you considering whether to try the Summer Fridays CC Me Serum! It really is a gentle, gorgeous serum that was a pleasure to use but it does only contain derivatives of vitamin C and so you need to be realistic in what this serum can achieve for you and your skin.

Have any of you tried this serum? What are your thoughts on it? Let me know in the comments section!
