A beauty product review this week! The Stila One Step Correct Primer. Will it be the answer to my WFH complexion woes?! 🧐
So Why Did I Purchase This?
Well, I wanted something to wear on the days that I truly didn’t want to wear any makeup. You know some days (or these 2020 days), I genuinely cannot be bothered to put any form of makeup on my face. However, if you’ve read my blog posts before, you may know that I’m a little self-conscious of the red blotches on my face. So, I was looking for something to even that out, so that if I did venture down to the mail room or the coffee shop under our apartment, I wouldn’t look so ‘bare’ shall we say…
So, the online search commenced (God, I miss the days of just being able to easily pop into a department store and have a look around in person!!), and this primer popped up as I was looking at tinted moisturisers. Now, I knew I didn’t want a tinted moisturiser because, well, they confuse me! Do you wear them instead of moisturiser and put SPF on top? Or do you wear them like a foundation and still use a normal moisturiser? Am I being dense? Probably! Regardless, I didn’t want to have to figure out my colour online etc. So, this is why I was so drawn to this Stila One Step Correct Primer.
I got mine from Look Fantastic after looking at some of the reviews. A proportion of them remarked that this primer did no colour correcting at all which made me question if I should get it. Anyway, there was a deal on with it so I got it anyway!
What Does It Claim To Do?
According to the Stila website:
“This innovative, triple-swirled helix serum instantly primes, colour-corrects, brightens and nourishes skin for a flawless face with no fuss.
The revolutionary product contains 3 colour-correcting pigments to even out complexion:
- Green tone instantly neutralises redness and conceals blemishes
- Lavender tone counteracts sallow undertones for a vibrant, energised look
- Peach tone brightens, illuminates and helps diminish the appearance of sun spots
Supercharged with Stila’s proprietary Youth Revival Bio-Available Mineral Complex™ to help hydrate, control oil, and diminish the appearance of pores and fine lines.“
I mean, I loved it the minute I got it out of the box! It was so pretty with all the colours swirling around in a helix. Plus, it’s in a see-through bottle so you can see the lavender, peach and green hues. You can also see when you’re near to finishing which is really handy! Think of how many products you have which you can never tell how close you are to finishing them because of the packaging! Obviously not the end of the world as you can feel the product getting lighter as it gets emptier but still!
My final thought was that I liked the dispenser. One pump gives you the perfect amount to cover your face and neck (if desired). Most of the time, however, I use half a pump as I just apply it to my face.

*Anything after phenoxyethanol in an ingredients list is in an amount less than 1%. This is because there is a worldwide regulation on the amount of this preservative that can be used, which is 1%. Therefore, anything listed after this in an ingredients list has to be less than 1% in amount. This is because ingredients are listed in order of amount contained in the product.
So, as expected, this primer applies beautifully on top of my skincare. Most likely due to the fact that it contains silicone. It also doesn’t cause any pilling (where the product balls up and basically comes off your face!). Contrary to what it appears like, the coloured formula disappears as you rub it in so no obvious green or yellow hues are left behind on your face.
As to it’s claims in what it can do for your face. Yes, I think it definitely evens my skin, to a degree. I apply it and within 5 or so minutes, my skin does appear to be calmed and less red looking. However, if you are hoping that this primer will take every single bit of redness out of your skin, it won’t do that. It also won’t ‘conceal blemishes’ as it claims. In my opinion, nothing but a concealer or foundation will do this so I’m not sure why Stila has claimed this!
It also does the job in brightening but without the dewy look. I personally like my face to look and feel dewy because I have dry skin. But, if you had oily skin I think that you would like how this primer, ever so slightly, ‘mattes’ your skin.
As for the oil control throughout the day and the diminishing of sun spots, I can’t answer that as I don’t have oily skin and neither do I have sun spots. However, I can imagine that it would ‘diminish‘ the appearance of sun spots but not completely cover them.
Lastly, I couldn’t find out much about this “Youth Revival Bio-Available Mineral Complex™”. However, it claims to hydrate and diminish the appearance of pores and fine lines. This primer definitely doesn’t hydrate my skin directly. However, the inclusion of dimethicone (a silicone) in the ingredients tell me that it will act as an occlusive, i.e. forms a protective seal over the skin to prevent loss of hydration. In this way it will also give the temporary effect of diminished fine lines and perhaps, will also, ‘blur‘ the appearance of pores. Again, I don’t have visible pores because of my dry skin so can’t claim on that one!
Once opened it lasts 6 months.
Would I Purchase It Again?
I don’t know what it is about this product but I really like it! In terms of my aim of finding something to even my skin tone and make me look less ‘bare’, I honestly think I would be better off with a tinted moisturiser! But for some reason, every weekday when I don’t wear makeup (whilst WFH), I keep reaching for this!!
However, I do want to find that perfect WFH base. So… I think I’m going to get over my tinted moisturiser confusion and try one! If this primer happened to be in a sale, however, I will purchase it again. Simply because, when I used it on the weekend under makeup, it provided a great, smooth base for my makeup to sit on top of. So, in that sense, I would buy it again to serve that purpose but as for my WFH complexion, it’s still under construction!
