Well, today was meant to be all about rice in skincare but I had a few people on Instagram asking me about a lash product that I’ve been using. So, here we are, a blog on lash serums and a review of UKLash Eyelash Serum!
How do lash serums work? Do they work? Let’s look into these questions and then take a look at the lash serum I’ve been using for the last 7 months 😍.
Do Lash Serums Really Work?
The idea of lash serums was first discovered in the treatment of glaucoma (an eye condition characterised by increased pressure in the eye). One side effect of the drops used to treat this condition was longer lashes. But what caused this growth in lashes?
The answer is prostaglandins.
Prostaglandins are a group of fatty acid compounds which can cause various hormonal side effects, including hair growth. They can even cause hair growth in follicles not currently containing any lashes.
Examples of prostaglandins:
- Bimatoprost (found in prescription lash serum ‘Latisse‘)
- Isopropyl Cloprostenate (a synthetic analogue of prostaglandins, found in the lash serum ‘Rapid Lash’)
- Dechloro Dihydroxy Difluoro Ethylcloprostenolamide (a synthetic analogue of prostaglandins, found in the lash serum ‘RevitaLash Advanced’)
Products containing prostaglandins have the power and ability to stimulate hair growth – FACT.
So Why Don’t All Lash Serums Contain Prostaglandins?
The short answer is that the above mentioned prostaglandins have the potential to cause the following side effects:
- Eyelid pigmentation
- Permanent eye colour change (ongoing use may turn blue eyes brown)
- Lowering of eye pressure if the serum gets in the eye (it’s a treatment for glaucoma after all!!)
- If you get the serum anywhere than the lash line you may have hair growth in places you don’t want it
Therefore, for some people (like myself), these aren’t risks that I’m willing to gamble on. I have blue eyes and I’m kinda a fan of them and don’t want to change over to brown eyes anytime soon! So what’s the alternative I hear you ask?
Prostaglandin-Free Lash Serums
In theory, lash serums without prostaglandins are essentially just lash conditioners. They do not have the ability to stimulate lash growth like prostaglandins do. What they will do is hydrate and soften lashes which will give the appearance of lashes that are longer and fuller.
So, If They Don’t Contain Prostaglandins, What Do They Contain?
The alternatives contain peptides (such as Myristoyl Pentapeptide-17 and Myristoyl Pentapeptide-12) and/or vitamins (such as Vitamins A, C, E and Pro-Vitamin B5).
Whilst the peer-reviewed, published, independent studies do not attest to the power of these products to stimulate hair growth, there are many lash serum brands out there that would argue otherwise, with their own study results and reviews.
Examples of prostaglandin-free lash serums:
Ok, so golden question, do these prostaglandin-free versions work?! Read on 😉.

Does It Work?
For me, yes and I’m going to let the pictures do the talking here. I experienced a DOUBLING in lash length from when I was post-lash extensions to now.
So, I’m going to preface this by saying that I’ve always been told that I had nice lashes because they were thick, dark and curly BUT they’ve never been this long.
However, after (stupidly) getting lash extensions done for about 6 months, my lashes were not the same after them. It was during lockdown, when I couldn’t get them done, that they all came out and I was left with lashes that were short, brittle and growing straight out. I was devastated. Then I panicked, saw a Facebook ad for UKLash eyelash serum and bought it!
I would live not to regret this purchase though, it turned out to be one of the best things that I had bought during lockdown!
The minute it arrived in it’s cute pink envelope, I ripped open the bag, washed my face and applied this serum. I then prayed for an overnight miracle (which of course didn’t happen). What did happen though (and in time!) was the above growth!
I committed to applying this serum every night without fail, after washing my face and before applying skincare. By 8 weeks, I was noticing big changes to my lashes. They were fuller at the lash line and starting to get longer. By 10 weeks, I was genuinely being stopped whilst food shopping and being asked what I had done to my lashes. Majority of the time I had no makeup on my eyes!
From 12 weeks onwards, I would say that my lashes had reached their most healthy and longest state. After this my lashes didn’t get any longer so instead my focus then shifted to maintenance of these “Bambi lashes” with continued, regular use of the serum.
Does One Tube Do The Job?
Now, if like my husband, you wonder if you need to keep using the serum once your lashes are longer and thicker, then the answer is YES! Of course, like with a moisturiser, if you stop moisturising your skin it’s going to become dehydrated and then dry. You have to keep using the serum on your lashes to maintain your results. You have to commit otherwise they will return to how they were before using this serum. However, you can reduce usage down to every other night, if desired and as recommended by UKLash.
Gimme The Deets
PRICE: £37.99 for 3ml
HOW LONG DOES ONE TUBE LAST? 3 months – I can confirm this! I bought my first tube in March 2020, second tube in June and third tube in September. Let me just say as well, I never once skipped a night of use so these tubes did good to last 3 months!
How To Use It?
Every evening, I wash my face and let it dry. Then I apply this serum on each eye, along my lash line from inner corner to outer corner and let it dry. Then I move on to my skincare routine, toner, serums, moisturiser etc. I avoid applying any skincare products on my lash line regardless of whether I’m using this lash serum as they get easily irritated.
You don’t need to apply the serum on your lower lash line because when you blink, the product naturally transfers to them.
I experienced zero stinging or irritation, in or around my eyes, during the 7 months I’ve been using this product.
Would I Buy It Again?
Well, I’ve already purchased it 3 times so absolutely! I’ve got another lash serum from another brand to try though so I will see how that one compares to my beloved UKLASH one.
EDIT – OCTOBER 2020: The lash serum that I tried next after UKLASH was one by NYK1. I now use the NYK1 permanently, just out of preference. If you would like to see that review (and get a discount code for it!), see this blog post HERE.
My Advice To You?
- Commit to using your lash serum, you’re never going to see overnight results! It took me at least 8 weeks to even see any sort of change in my lashes.
- Don’t pay a ridiculous amount for a prostaglandin-free lash serum. I wouldn’t pay more than £30-£50 for one as you don’t know if it’s going to work for you. Especially if it doesn’t contain prostaglandins as these are the only ingredients in a lash serum that are proven to cause lash growth.
So that’s it from me today! I really hope you found this interesting.
Before using this serum, I didn’t believe in prostaglandin-free lash serums, I just thought they couldn’t possibly work. Then I tried one for myself and the results blew me away. I can’t guarantee you that you will see length results like mine but I can definitely say that your lashes will feel and look healthier!
Have any of you tried out any lash serums? If yes, what was your experience? Let me know in the comments down below!
