HELLO KLEAN CLARIFYING SCALP SOAK REVIEW

AD// This blog post contains content that I have been paid to review. However, my thoughts are always my own, genuine and honest.

I don’t know about you but with the UK lockdowns I have admittedly become quite lazy when it comes to washing my hair. Now, I don’t suffer with oily hair, I never have, but with having fine hair, I tend to rely a lot on dry shampoo and leave-in styling products between washes. Using these types of products not only refreshes my hair, it also gives me some much needed texture to achieve a voluminous look. However, as with anything, there’s a downside to not washing your hair as much and over relying on leave-in products – you get product build up in your hair leading to a feeling of congestion. This can all cause your scalp to become dry, itchy and irritated and your hair to look dull, flat and lifeless.

Using dry shampoo/other leave-in hair products aren’t the only causes of an unhappy scalp, however. If you suffer from excess oil or live in an area with hard water (which has a high mineral content), these factors can all contribute to a scalp that is less than happy and hair that needs to be washed more frequently.

The solution? Well, I was given the opportunity to try out Hello Klean’s brand new Clarifying Scalp Soak to see if it could help cheer up my dry and congested scalp!

So, let’s get into the review!

A Bit About The Brand: Hello Klean

Hello Klean is a female-founded startup created by Karlee Ozener.

Karlee started out as a Social Media Manager for Huda Beauty and whilst she was doing this she moved around a lot. With every move, Karlee suffered skin and hair issues that she couldn’t resolve with supplements or products. She then came to the realisation that water must be the issue.

With research, she learned that each city’s water composition is unique and so, our hair and skin react to it differently. Hard water has a high mineral content, as we’ve touched on, which can cause faded hair colour, hair loss, scalp irritation, and dry, sensitive skin.

On a mission to fix her own skin and hair issues, Hello Klean was created.

Within Hello Klean’s portfolio, you not only have the brand new Clarifying Scalp Soak, you also have the Hello Klean Shower Filter. To find out more about the shower filter, see HERE.

Tell Me More About The Clarifying Scalp Soak

Hello Klean’s Clarifying Scalp Soak is a gentle yet powerful detox for your scalp and hair. It cleanses and clarifies your scalp from the big three causes of build-up: product residue, hard water and pollution.

The Clarifying Scalp Soak is enriched with a powerful blend of Apple Cider Vinegar, Fermented Rice Water and Sweet Almond Extract. It’s a low-foaming formula which gently lifts residue whilst still also delivering long-lasting hydration to your scalp and hair.

This product has been designed to be used as a treatment for your scalp and hair once or twice a week.

How Do I Use The Clarifying Scalp Soak?

The product has a serum-like texture and is low-foam when rinsed off. It’s designed to be used at the shampoo stage (replacing your shampoo) and before conditioner (if you use conditioner).

The Clarifying Scalp Soak is less stripping than a shampoo and more breathable than a conditioner. You use as many pumps as required for your hair length/type, massage the product through your hair and leave for 5 minutes before rinsing off and following with your conditioner.

For my current hair length (middle of my back), I found 4 full pumps to be enough product to cover all my hair and scalp. I also personally like to use conditioner after the Scalp Soak as I have bleached hair, so my hair is prone to dryness.

Is It Suitable For My Hair Type?

The Clarifying Scalp Soak is suitable for bleached, coloured or chemically treated hair.

My Personal Experience

When I first received this product, I honestly thought to myself ‘does my hair need this?!’. Then one rainy Sunday afternoon I decided to hop in the shower and give it a go and I was genuinely pleasantly surprised at the results.

As I pumped the clear, serum-like product into my hands, I was surprised by the gentle vinegar smell that washed over me. It’s reminiscent of Gallinee’s Face Vinegar, if you’ve tried it. I love the scent of that as I do this, I find it refreshing. Another thing that I noticed was how little it lathers up into a foam, you do get a slight foam but nothing too crazy and nothing that takes aaaaages to wash out which I liked.

After applying it, I then grabbed the Exfoliating Scalp Brush (see shot below) and gave my scalp the most glorious massage! It’s a brush designed to gently slough away dead skin cells and stimulate the scalp which is suitable for all hair types. It really amps up the Sunday self-care moment for me!

The Clarifying Scalp Soak is designed to be left on the hair for 5 minutes so instead of standing there in the shower waiting (we all do it…), I did the scalp massage for the entire 5 minutes and it was amazing!!

After 5 minutes, I then washed it out and felt my hair. For me personally, my hair felt a little dry but this is normal for me. Regardless of what shampoo I use, I’m left with dry hair before applying conditioner and that’s probably because I have bleach blonde locks!

I then went on to do the rest of my routine which includes soaking my hair in conditioner and brushing it through my hair. After my shower, I wrapped my hair up in a microfibre towel and grabbed my usual styling products to apply before blow-drying my hair.

How Did My Hair Feel After Blow Drying It?

So this is where the ‘wow’ factor comes in. After blow drying my hair, my scalp felt clean and balanced and my hair was soft and shiny. Now as a blonde, we all know the struggle of getting shiny hair but this product did exactly that – see the photo below! I was so pleasantly surprised! And before anyone asks… no, my hair did not smell like vinegar afterwards!

Another surprise was the fact that by Friday, 5 days after last washing my hair, I could have still got away with not washing my hair! My hair was still voluminous, oil-free (not that I suffer with oil but I do get my skincare all in my roots around my face which can cause it to look greasy) and felt light to the touch. I was actually amazed!! I can imagine if you are someone who washes their hair more than they want to, this could be a lifesaver for you! It’s taken me from needing to wash my hair twice a week to someone who could easily get away with washing it once a week, and that’s even with me styling my hair and using products in it!

How Do I Include This Product In My Existing Hair Routine?

Firstly it depends on how often you wash your hair per week, I wash mine 2 times a week. So, I use the Clarifying Scalp Soak once per week on a Monday and then I use my usual pre-shower hair mask and volume boosting shampoo/conditioner on a Thursday, before the weekend. Doing it this way around means that my hair and scalp have been cleared of all product up from over the weekend.

I know most of you probably aren’t doing much to your hair on the weekends whilst still being in lockdown. However, once we get some normality back and go back to styling our hair again, you may find this Clarifying Scalp Soak beneficial!! I still personally style my hair and do my makeup on the weekends as it makes me feel a little bit more normal so I’ve been able to see how beneficial the Clarifying Scalp Soak has been in terms of product build-up.

It also depends on if you live in an area with hard water too. Since you may find that due to the high mineral content in your water, you have to wash your hair almost every day. With the Clarifying Scalp Soak in your routine, you may find that you are actually able to reduce the amount that you wash your hair. In this case, Hello Klean would recommend that you use this Scalp Soak twice a week for optimal results.

In Conclusion…

If you are someone who lives in an area with hard water, suffers with oily hair or product build up, this Clarifying Scalp Soak is definitely worth a try! I’ve been so impressed with it and also think it would be great for when I resume travelling again. I’m that person, with that hair, that is super affected by changes in water when staying in different cities or countries. So, this will be without doubt, my new travel companion!

It really is the product you didn’t know you needed until you tried it! I’ve also not tried another product like it so far.
